How To Find A Workout Buddy

There are times when it can be hard to find the motivation to work out solo, day-after-day.

That’s okay — life happens!

We all have those days when we’re juggling more work than usual, or family responsibilities require more of your time. For some women, working out by yourself can also be a little demotivating.

One way to combat this is to find a workout buddy to help keep you training regularly. Say hello to feeling connected and ready to start your workout no matter what’s happening around you.

How to find a workout buddy

Finding a workout buddy starts with one simple action: asking friends, colleagues or acquaintances if they want to partner up with you to exercise.

You could mention it in a social media post, or during a regular catch up — you might be surprised with how many people respond to your invitation!

Exercising with a friend has lots of perks: it’s someone who can keep you on track, won’t let you bail when you’re considering skipping the session and can offer support and encouragement when you need it.

Don’t worry if you can’t meet up in person

If you’re working out at home, you and your workout partner can still exercise together! Set a time to work out together over a video call — your location is no barrier.

If you’re able to meet your workout buddy in person, make it a time that works for both of you each week. Another thing to consider is ensuring you find a space big enough for both of you and any equipment you’ll be using.

Schedule your sessions

Keeping to a regular schedule is one way to get the most out of having a workout partner.

If you’ve never tried working out in the morning, this could be a way to create a new healthy routine by scheduling exercise first thing. If you’re meeting up with your workout buddy via video call and you’re not in the same area, you could use time zones to your advantage.

If your lunchtime matches up with their evening, you could both use these times to get in a workout and a catch-up. An advantage to a workout at lunchtime is it gives you a chance to re-energise so you’re ready to focus on the afternoon ahead.

You can use the Sweat app Planner feature to schedule the sessions you want to do with your workout partner.

Whether you’re meeting up in person or virtually, you could try a few different times to see what works for both and your workout partner. It’s a great way to spend time with a friend no matter where they are!

Make sure you’ve got shared interests

If you’re on the lookout for a workout partner, find a friend with either a similar interest in exercise; perhaps you both enjoy high-intensity training. Alternatively, find a friend that is skilled in a training style that you would love to learn.

The best part? The workout can double up as a friendly catch-up, which means you get your exercise in and have quality time with your friend. Win-win!

Meet Up With Your Workout Buddy Outdoors

Take it outside

Exercising outdoors in a communal area can be a great way to make your workouts more social and there are so many possibilities!

Whether you opt for a local park or travel a little further for a change of scenery — by a beach or lake can be great options — an outdoor workout is good for your mind as well as your Vitamin D intake.

Try to find areas with steps or other features that mean you can do incline push-ups, lying leg raises, sit-ups, and more.

There are lots of ways to improvise if you’re exercising outdoors with a friend  — look for places where you can roll out a fitness mat and do a workout together in the great outdoors.

If you want to get in a low-intensity cardio workout, look for hiking trails or walks that you can do in the time you’ve scheduled together — having a great view at the end of your exercise session is a good way to reward you both for completing a workout.

Join a group online

If you want to expand your horizons, why not join a fitness group online?

Whether the group is specific to a style of exercise or a program, joining a group such as the Sweat community, with like-minded members, means you instantly have something in common to discuss and bond over. with like-minded members means you instantly have something in common to discuss and bond over.

These groups are full of like-minded women who can offer encouragement and support — both are important elements of your fitness journey!

You might feel motivated by the fact that your group spans the globe, or inspired by one more specific to your state, city or region.

If you find that one doesn’t exist, you could consider starting your own. It could lead to incredible friendships and a fantastic support network.

How To Find A Workout Buddy With Social Media

Share and be rewarded

Sharing your journey on social media isn’t for everyone, but it can be a great way to widen your network and meet new people.

If you are meeting up with a workout buddy virtually, you can celebrate your achievements on social media. It’s a way to detail any future ambitions, and keep you both on track with your health and fitness goals

If you pledge on social media that you and your workout partner have plans to accomplish something new, beat personal bests or complete an advanced workout, you have a community around you to encourage you and ensure you see it through.

As your journey progresses, you’ll likely find yourself with your very own cheer squad, supporting your every move.

Challenge a friend

Are you someone who likes a bit of healthy competition to keep you on your toes?

Challenge a friend to smash a personal best, up the number of reps in a workout or do more steps in a day — it could be anything! Just make it specific to you and your friend and in line with your fitness goals. You could even invite a friend to join the same Sweat program as you by using the "Sweat with a friend" button — you'll see it when you earn a trophy or in the profile section of the app.

You could each take turns in running your workouts, and determining what the focus of the training session will be — you might decide one session is all about glutes, while your friend sets up an at-home ab workout the next time you exercise together.

The trick is to make your workouts fun and exciting to keep you focused and on track.

Your workout partner is waiting for you!

No matter how you connect with your workout partner — in person or via video call — the key is that you hold each other accountable to your exercise plans.

Having a friend or Sweat Community member to exercise with is also a way to have more fun working out while still making progress on your fitness journey.
